So in other words, if you want any significant number of them, you'll have to go grind for a couple of weeks at minimum. I frequently find rare crafting materials, the rarest still being Manticore Eyes. Tainted Brain Matter drops far more frequently, but yes, chances are best with bosses and treasure troves.

I wouldn't rely on The Warden alone. He can drop Tainted Brain Matter (TBM), yes, but there are other bosses who can drop TBM, too.
Darius Cronley is among them, as well as Commander Lucius (although Lucius is a little troublesome). Treasure troves are not hard to find at all. On the contrary, they have a limited amount of spawning locations, especially the one in the Mountain Deeps is easy to find, so easy indeed that I hunt it down in each session.

It is a total waste, especially because you can craft random legendaries with them if you visit the smith in Tyrant's Hold.

In fact, this is the most reliable (albeit expensive) method of acquiring legendaries. Reputation, experience, normal crafting materials, and iron bits can all be acquired through other means than quests which demand the sacrifice of rare crafting materials.
