The game plays and has different graphics capabilities on the PS3, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X and PC. The only thing missing was a hand-held version that could be played on the go. Bethesda plugged that hole yesterday with the release of the graphically enhanced Skyrim Special Edition on Nintendo’s Switch.Now you can play Skyrim when you’re out and about, but how much are you going to have to give up to run the game on the Switch’s limited hardware?
Compared the Switch and PS4 versions of Skyrim and came to a somewhat surprising conclusion. You don’t have to give up much. There’s definitely a graphics downgrade but it’s not as great as you might think.
Resolution comparison between the Switch (right) and the PS4 (left).ResolutionThe Skyrim Special Edition plays at native 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) on the PS4. Resolution on the Switch varies depending on whether you’re playing docked or undocked. The docked version plays at native 900p (1600 x 900) without dynamic resolution scaling.
As you can see in the image above, the Switch version on the right compares very well with the PS4 even though it’s playing at a reduced resolution.The GPU runs at roughly half-speed when the Switch is undocked which necessarily involves a decrease in resolution. Bethesda handled this in an interesting way. When you’re viewing a scene without a lot of detail, the game plays at native 720p (1280 x 720). However, when the detail increases, resolution on the vertical scale remains at 720p while horizontal resolution drops to 896p. You can see this change easily in areas where there’s a decent amount of foliage. Look up at the sky and then look down. The foliage will shimmer as the game switches from the sky viewed at native 720p to the lower resolution 896 x 720 view.

Shadows, draw distances, textures and more are the same in both versions. The only difference Digital Foundry reported is a small and hardly noticeable decrease in the level of detail at long distances,Graphics quality differs noticeably when you compare the docked version with the PS4. The most obvious loss comes in the foliage detail seen at middle distances. As can be seen in the above image, ground cover visible on the PS4 is completely stripped away on the Switch.There are also instances where the Switch makes us of lower resolution textures. Other graphics features such as shadow quality, volumetric lighting, depth of field and ambient occlusion are also pared back or absent on the Switch but are not as obvious as the loss of foliage.PerformanceThe story about performance differences between the PS4 and the Switch is that there is no story. Both versions are locked on the targeted frame rate of 30 fps.
Digital Foundry cautions that they were unable to test the Switch in the later portions of the game when Skyrim had notable performance issues on the P3. However, they also note the Switch has a lot more RAM than the PS3 which should eliminate the problems observed on the older console. Scenery on the docked SwitchConclusionSkyrim plays much better on the Switch than many may have expected. Almost all the differences in graphics that can be seen when looking at side-by-side comparisons are hardly noticeable when playing the game. The loss of mid-distance foliage is unlikely to matter unless you remember what the same scene looked like on a more powerful console while you’re playing on the Switch. The most noticeable effect of the 720p undocked presentation compared with the docked version running at 900p is a shimmer in foliage when the undocked version scales resolution down to 869 x 720.
Performance is a rock solid 30 fps.During their, the tech analysts at Digital Foundry keep coming back to one point. When they had the game in their hands and were playing on the Switch’s small screen, all of the graphical differences they documented made no difference.
